현재의 신생아들이 2021년의 성인보다 15배 많은 수치의 미세 플라스틱을 가지고 태어난다면, 사람의 장기는 미래에 어떤 형태를 띠게 될까요? <관상동맥 합성(Coronary Synthesis)>는 이와 같은 질문에서 출발한 작업으로, 이케아 샌드위치 봉지로 실(yarn)을 만들어 장기(organ)의 미래를 상상해보았습니다. 우리가 기후 온난화에 이바지하는 요소들의 계층적 척도를 만들 수는 없겠지만, 이것의 바탕에 깔린 불평등을 탐구하고 이에 대응하는 것은 중요합니다.

Coronary Synthesis is a piece that begs the question, if babies are being born with fifteen times more microplastics in them than adults in 2021 – what will human organs look like in the future? I created yarn from IKEA sandwich bags and began to experiment with an alternate future for organs. Whilst it’s difficult to create a hierarchical scale of factors that contribute to global warming, it’s important to explore and counter the injustice at the core of the issue.

Artists Statement

크래프티비즘(craftivism)과 비관습에 대한 탐구를 향한 열정으로, 헤더는 주로 섬유와 자수를 이용해 다양한 문제가 안고 있는 잘못된 관습과 부당함을 개선하기 위한 직물(fabric) 기반의 시위를 보여줍니다.

<관상동맥 합성(Coronary Synthesis)>은 ‘2021년에 신생아들이 성인들보다 15배나 더 많은 미세 플라스틱을 갖고 태어난다면 – 미래에 인간의 장기는 어떻게 생겼을 것이며 그에 대한 책임은 어디에 있는가?’라는 질문에서 출발했습니다. 헤더는 이케아(IKEA) 샌드위치 봉지를 털실의 용도로 변환시켜 관람객들에게 가짜 뉴스(fake news)의 실타래와 과잉 소비, 또한 제도적 불공정의 문제를 다루지 않고는 유토피아적인 미래를 테라포밍(terraforming) 할 수 없다는 사실을 상기시키고자 했습니다. 또한 이 플라스틱 심장의 형상은 플라스틱 사이보그의 디스토피아적인 미래를 반영하는 동시에 관객이 이 문제의 ‘심장’을 들여다보게 하는 데에 중점을 두고 있습니다.

<관상동맥 합성(Coronary Synthesis)>은 영상으로 마무리됩니다. 플라스틱 실로 만들어진 심장은 플라스틱 소비가 만연해 때로는 눈에 띄지 않는 장소들에 배치됩니다. 이는 눈앞에 위기를 전혀 알아채지 못하는 사람들에게 시각적 충격을 주며, 이를 통해 문제의 핵심에 있는 부당함에 맞서고자 합니다.

With a passion for craftivism and a keenness to explore the unconventional, my work often utilises textile and embroidery to create fabric protests on a number of different issues, with an aim to correct misrepresentation and explore injustice. My approach to Coronary Synthesis was no different.

The piece grew from the question, if babies are born with fifteen times more microplastics in them than adults in 2021 – what will human organs look like in the future and where does responsibility lie? I began repurposing IKEA sandwich bags into yarn, as I wanted to make a piece that encouraged viewers to pull at the threads of fake news and realise that – without addressing overconsumption and systemic injustice, we are unable to terraform a utopian future. I was also interested in the imagery of a plastic heart, reflecting a dystopian future of plastic cyborgs, whilst encouraging audiences to delve into the ‘heart’ of the issue.

Coronary Synthesis culminated in the creation of a video piece. It juxtaposes a heart constructed from plastic yarn with locations where plastics consumption is so normalised it is often ‘unseen’. Jolting the attention of the blissfully ignorant to counter the injustice at the core of this issue.
